Abstract

English as a lingua franca (ELF) has emerged as a dominant mode of communication in today's globalized world, transcending national boundaries and cultural barriers. This paper explores the implications of ELF for communication and intercultural understanding. By examining the dynamics of ELF usage in various contexts, including business, academia, and tourism, this study elucidates how ELF facilitates communication among speakers from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Moreover, it investigates the challenges and opportunities inherent in ELF communication, such as issues of comprehensibility, accommodation strategies, and power dynamics. Additionally, the paper discusses how ELF fosters intercultural understanding by promoting tolerance, empathy, and appreciation for linguistic diversity. It emphasizes the importance of developing intercultural communicative competence to navigate the complexities of ELF interactions effectively. Furthermore, the paper underscores the need for inclusive language policies and pedagogical approaches that recognize the plurality of English varieties and promote equitable participation in global communication. Overall, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the role of English as a lingua franca in shaping communication practices and fostering intercultural dialogue in a rapidly changing world.
